Summary
Sustainable IT is not an issue that solves itself or just goes away. Organisations have to take conscious steps to achieve it. Government requirements, regulations and social responsibility are drivers. Fortunately, the main driver is one that all organisations understand: cost reduction.
Many have already harvested low hanging fruit such as paper and print waste management and automated device power saving. The focus for members now combines optimising the data-centre, with organisation-wide energy (and therefore cost-saving) initiatives and pushing sustainability as a core competence across their supply chain and supplier portfolio.
An expert presentation describes how eco-cooling has made a major financial and carbon reduction impact in creating a new data-centre. Organisations describe what they have each done relating to sustainable IT and the Green agenda. Despite some commonality, there is additional scope for each organisation to pursue. Other topics include measurement, management support, power consumption, acquisitions/recycling/disposal, the supply chain, quick wins and repeatable wins. The discussion also highlights a way many organisations can potentially reduce their travel budget in 2012.
