Summary

Enterprise Search is an increasingly valuable tool in business intelligence, but definitions of search can vary between different organisations.

Broadly speaking, Enterprise Search means extracting information from one document or application, supporting decision making and business processes.  The first question many IT professionals have about this is how to make the leap from 'search' to 'intelligence'.

Most organisations already have some form of Enterprise Search in place or are in the early stages of deploying the technology, but it can be an enormous challenge to gather information from search and make it available (and useful) for other applications and systems.

Using search over a distributed network can also present significant challenges, since many organisations have information across huge global networks with varying levels of integration and connectivity.

Some organisations also report huge political issues around enterprise search and search data, generally, which can make it difficult to make the most of its potential.
