Download the Output Report, which was compiled from experiences shared amongst corporate IT professionals with input from 15 delegates representing 13 different organisations. Represented industries included local and central government, life sciences and financial services.

Summary

Open source technology can still be viewed as a risky choice by some enterprises, but the majority of corporate contributors to this report are using open source technologies to some degree. The report includes discussion of best practice in evaluating open source products and projects for enterprise use, and recommendations of how to build a corporate open source strategy.

Open Source technologies are widely used by corporate IT departments, but they are seen as an inherently more risky choice than commercial software products.

This risk does not mean that open source is not considered suitable for core IT systems. Rather, IT leaders say that they build risk acceptance and assessment into their business plans, and ask slightly different questions when evaluating open source products and projects.
