The Consumerisation of Corporate IT is an inevitable process that has gained considerable momentum over the last two years. The introduction of these devices into the workplace began in earnest with the release of the iPad. Initially confined to the upper echelons of the organisation the tablet and smartphone have now become a common sight in business.
Summary
In some cases IT has become responsible for sourcing, configuring and managing devices. Other organisations are hoping to realise the financial benefits of BYO (Buy Your Own) computing, allowing user-owned devices access to corporate networks, data and applications.
In December 2011 The Corporate IT Forum conducted a Reality Checker survey to understand the prevalence of certain devices, types of desktop deployed and to whom. Key findings show that organisations are researching iOS devices, the iPad is being used in isolation by nearly a third of respondents and senior management is being allocated these tablets.
