As IT departments are pushed to squeeze every available bang out of each buck, has Open Source finally become a readily available corporate solution?
Summary
Members of the Corporate IT Forum wanted to understand the changes businesses are experiencing with Open Source Software (OSS).
A Reality Checker survey was run in May and June 2011 which received 134 responses from over 55 organisations. Key findings show that Open Source is used to support the IT estate, with the main driver still the lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than proprietary software. Skills to support Open Source are scarce leading to support contracts being outsourced. Contributing organisations represent an annual IT spend of £9.5 billion and employ over 1.15 million people.
