Small margin between those experiencing and those not experiencing skills shortages.  Ensuring knowledge transfer within an outsourcer is still an issue.

Summary

Today's changing corporate landscape ensures a continual need for both technical and business savvy leadership within IT.  With the appetite for outsourcing becoming constant, organisations are experiencing an increasing shortage of home-grown talent.

This Reality Checker aims to uncover the changes businesses are experiencing with Skills in IT.  Participants need to understand the challenges faced in recruitment, development and ongoing support IT professionals.  144 respondents from over 60 organisations answered questions on skill shortages, recruitment, frameworks and changes that need to be made.  Contributing organisations represent an annual IT spend of £11.5 billion and employ over 1.1 million people.

Headline findings:

  • Majority still seeing a shortage: situation is unchanged for some time.
  • Survey reveals shortage of experienced architects.
  • Government policies and tactics having no effect.
  • Graduate recruitment preferred over IT apprenticeships: Graduate placements more popular.
  • Next generation of IT workers from India: suggest ongoing outsourcing strategies.
  • Outsourcing inhibits development of IT Leaders: few opportunities for experience.
