Summary

In February 2011 The Corporate IT Forum conducted a Reality Checker survey to understand the changes businesses are undergoing with client computing and desktop models.  43 respondents from over 20 organisations answered questions on models implemented, strategies and suppliers used.  Contributing organisations represent an annual IT spend of £6.5 billion and employ more than 470,000 people.

Some headline findings include:

  • PC model still favourite: The traditional PC / Laptop model is, as expected, still used by the majority of respondents.
  • Virtualisation continues to grow in popularity: Both VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) and Application Presentation Server experience a noteworthy increase in implementations.
  • Models align with Business Strategy: The majority are pursing their approach primarily because it aligns with their business strategy.
  • Exceptions should fit Model: Respondents try to ensure that any exceptions to their chosen model fit as closely as possible.
  • Combination approach for migration: The majority choose combination of strategic upgrades, repurposing and big bang approach to migrate.
  • Improving the User Experience: Respondents were agreed that providing a more mobile or flexible approach (improving the user's experience) was at the top of the list.
  • Microsoft moves into VMware space: More organisations now use Microsoft than in 2009 indicating a growing market share over VMware and Citrix.
