This is the second iteration of the e‐Crime survey from the Corporate IT Forum's Information ecurity Service. The 2009 survey was designed to find out if e‐Crime against corporate Britain was on the rise and, if so, what the incidents were and what was the nature and extent of reporting to the police.

Summary

It was discovered that such e‐Crime was indeed on the rise ‐ by almost 70% compared with 2007. It was, moreover, seen to be gaining in complexity, being increasingly perpetrated by professional criminal gangs. However, companies were, last year, loath to report cases to the police. Not because the process was too complicated, too expensive or too time consuming but rather because the bodies they were required to report e‐Crime to were, they believed, under resourced and ill equipped. Business confidence in this area was very low.

So, has the situation improved? In September 2008, the Home Office announced £7m funding for the creation of the Police Central e‐crime Unit (PCeU). In part, this was a consequence of a two year campaign by businesses for the creation of a national agency to fight computer crime, supported by The Corporate IT Forum. Has the advent of the PCeU made a difference?
