In 2012 corporate IT departments will play a critical role in the future success of the business.  Despite the challenging economic conditions, heads of corporate IT in Enterprise are upbeat about the prospects for the industry this year and see businesses turning to IT departments for innovative ways of using technology to do more with less.

The Consumerisation of Corporate IT is an inevitable process that has gained considerable momentum over the last two years. The introduction of these devices into the workplace began in earnest with the release of the iPad. Initially confined to the upper echelons of the organisation the tablet and smartphone have now become a common sight in business.


This survey highlights that IT Risk Management is a maturing area of the business as organisations endeavour to understand the current risk appetite of the business and the risk landscape.  As new strategies are put in place for the new year organisations are continuing to focus on cost cutting strategies and 'doing more with less' as budgets are continually squeezed and, in some sectors, frozen.

Enterprise Architecture will form an integral part of ongoing IT strategies in 2012.  This Reality Checker discusses the prevalence and maturity of EA frameworks and processes, benefits that organisations are realising and tools used successfully. 

Unified communications (UC) is the integration of real-time communication services such as instant messaging, presence information, telephony (including IP telephony), video conferencing, with non-real-time communication services such as unified messaging (integrated voicemail, e-mail, SMS and fax).  As employees demand ever more collaborative solutions and instant communication channels, ensuring that the best products are deployed is essential.


Service Management is a consistently popular topic amongst members of The Forum and was voted the second most important business strategy in the 2011 Corporate Strategy Survey.  This Reality Checker compares the maturity of Service Management from 2009 through to 2011.

Over the last couple of years the Forum has sporadically discussed sustainable IT and various green strategies and issues that impact our members.

 


Many organisations outsource certain areas of IT and the Business from time to time as skills are lost or gained and where costs can be reduced or efficiencies made. Knowing what works well in an outsourced environment can be half the battle.

Whether a waterfall or more iterative approach is better for development projects is a debate that can be argued passionately from both sides with no obvious winner.

This is the second iteration of the e‐Crime survey from the Corporate IT Forum's Information ecurity Service. The 2009 survey was designed to find out if e‐Crime against corporate Britain was on the rise and, if so, what the incidents were and what was the nature and extent of reporting to the police.

How mature are your organisation's processes?

With the recent roll out of IE8, the imminent release of Windows 7 and the rumours surrounding Midori (Windows 8) how has the corporate appetite for upgrades changed? Has there been a major shift to IE7 and Vista as the press has hyped and is there still a place for IE5 or Windows 2000?

Coined in reference to the move of voice from the PBX to an IP network; Unified Communications (UC) now encompasses all forms of communication from presence through to email, messaging and mobile. Analysts and strategists have claimed that effective UC implementations can dramatically change enterprise productivity and efficiencies, but that poor implementations could 'be disruptive instead of productive'.

Virtualization has become common place within the IT departments of the Forum’s members; its approach is fast spreading to other areas away from the initial rush over server virtualization. Now storage, network and application virtualization is becoming widespread.
