The 'Biometric Technologies in Today's World' webinar takes a fresh look at what might be achieved with this technology and what the implications are for its adoption across a variety of scenarios. Delivered and conceived by the Information and Security Service (tISS) from the Corporate IT Forum, this expert-led webinar consists of a presentation by a specialist in the area of biometrics and identity management.
Summary
Biometrics consist of methods for uniquely recognising humans, based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioural traits. In computer science biometrics are used as a form of identity access management and access control.
Biometric technology is not new; it has been around for a long time and has been widely adopted in areas such as border control and law enforcement. On a smaller scale, there have been many implementations for closed loop systems in areas such as travel and corporate access control. However, there remain inherent factors which are not universally understood.
In today's world, Security Professionals have to find more sophisticated ways to secure their buildings and data, and biometric technology would seem to fit many such aspirations well. However, there are implications around the adoption of such technologies from both an operational, personal and societal perspective, which should be acknowledged and understood.
Forum members want to understand where developments have taken this technology today and how organisations may use it in the future. Attending member organisations are at various different stages of considering or implementing such technologies or they are investigating identity management integration with legacy systems.
The 'Biometric Technologies in Today's World' webinar was attended by ten Information Security Professionals from nine organisations representing a cross-section of industries, including airways, defence, financial services, health care, IT services and utilities.
