Linking Change, Configuration, and Release Management

The report describes the different approaches to roles and responsibilities within each of the disciplines and describes practical approaches to managing them in the real world

Summary

Although a holistic approach to Change, Configuration/CMDB and Release Management was desirable because of the ‘touch points’ between these disciplines no organisation appears to have achieved it yet.

The report describes the different approaches to roles and responsibilities within each of the disciplines and describes practical approaches to managing them in the real world. Key to all this is winning ‘hearts and minds’ to support a new change management culture and a number of ways are outlined where this has been done successfully.

Four of the organisations present had a CMDB in place and give advice on its design and implementation based on their experience.

The report ends with comments from users on some of the main tools used to support the processes around change and configuration management as well as the metrics produced that monitor progress,
