Tools and Supporting Strategies for Software Licence Management

"The perfect SAM tool does not exist; or rather there is no tool that can automate everything for you. Tools will help to get you there but there is no silver bullet. The process you have in place will underpin what goes on and will be the key to successful asset management."
Corporate IT Forum SAM workshop, April 2011

Summary:

Software licensing is becoming increasingly complex as the ways that businesses consume technology continue to evolve and proliferate. With mainstream adoption of virtualisation and consumerisation, it is clearly becoming more difficult for both organisations and software vendors to monitor what is being used and where.

Licence management and discovery tools can help organisations better understand what licences are available within a company and what software is installed - members have identified building an entitlement data repository, licence number calculation, audit data import/integration and reconciliation as major usage benefits. And those with a maturing software asset management function have been able to prove through the use of tools and dedicated resource that real cost savings can be made and risks greatly reduced, with high levels of compliancy achieved.SoftwareONE
